What Is Exostectomy - Recovery From Exostectomy

Exostectomy is the process of removing bony bumps on the bones. These bony bumps which form on the surface of a bone are also known as exostoses. These can give rise to chronic pain, from mild to severe depending on its size and numbers and can also appear on different locations of the body. The most commonly affected areas include bones of toes (e.g. removal of a bunion), foot, legs, arms, fingers, shoulder blades and pelvis.

Exostectomy is required to prevent damage to the structure of the nerves and tendons because exostoses usually occur near and press on these nerves and tendons. This procedure is only recommended if the pain is severe, the exostosis is pressing on an important structure, if it is easily knocked or bumped, or if it is cosmetically unappealing.

Common causes of exostoses is usually due to recurring foot or ankle injury, or conducting sports that involve the ‘pushing off’ from a position with the foot bent upwards.

Recovery usually takes about 3 – 4 weeks and rest of the affected area is vital. If the foot has been surgically treated on, weight bearing must be avoided to allow proper healing, and the use of crutches is vital. In addition, the foot should be elevated.

To prevent the formation of exostoses, you should conduct muscle strengthening and conditioning exercises regularly; fully rest and heal the foot injury before returning to any sport and physical activity.
